I'm fairly new to beagles and haven't seen too many so I have some questions that I'm hoping some of you can help me with advice. I have a ten month old pup with a long tail that has been bleeding from hunting for three weeks now. It's gotten so bad that he lasted only an hour last Saturday. I have seen bloody tails but nothing like this. He came out of the hunt and just hung around after the first hour, so I put him back in the box. There is no hair for the last inch and a quarter and another bare spot showing a half inch below that.
So far I have it wrapped up with white athletic tape and EMT gel. I haven't looked at it since Sunday AM because it's wrapped and I probably won't until the wrapping falls off. He's not messing with it so I'll leave it there as long as I can. Because of the length of his tail I'm thinking that this will be an ongoing issue for this pup and am thinking that it may be in his best interest to dock it by a couple of inches.
I have heard that people do it with bands and for the most part, it's fairly simple. Am I being naive? Is it difficult to do? Can I do it and where would i get the supplies? I realize that a veterinarian would be the safest way but with three bird dogs and two beagles I spend a lot of money with the vet and I'm trying to save some money if I can.
Thanks, Dave
