Blown tail and banding Empty Blown tail and banding

Post  Sebago Tue Dec 10, 2013 1:08 am

I'm fairly new to beagles and haven't seen too many so I have some questions that I'm hoping some of you can help me with advice.  I have a ten month old pup with a long tail that has been bleeding from hunting for three weeks now.  It's gotten so bad that he lasted only an hour last Saturday.  I have seen bloody tails but nothing like this.  He came out of the hunt and just hung around after the first hour, so I put him back in the box.  There is no hair for the last inch and a quarter and another bare spot showing a half inch below that.

So far I have it wrapped up with white athletic tape and EMT gel.  I haven't looked at it since Sunday AM because it's wrapped and I probably won't until the wrapping falls off.  He's not messing with it so I'll leave it there as long as I can.  Because of the length of his tail I'm thinking that this will be an ongoing issue for this pup and am thinking that it may be in his best interest to dock it by a couple of inches.

I have heard that people do it with bands and for the most part, it's fairly simple.  Am I being naive?  Is it difficult to do?  Can I do it and where would i get the supplies?  I realize that a veterinarian would be the safest way but with three bird dogs and two beagles I spend a lot of money with the vet and I'm trying to save some money if I can.

    Thanks, Dave

    Dave,
Very easy to do....Get the stuff......Band and tool to spread em' with.....Slide over tail, just beyond the damaged area and make sure you place band between the joints in the tail.....Give it a little over a week and it will fall off.....That simple....We done a walker male during bear season and run him the whole time it was on, without any issues......The more you take off the longer it will take, but don't hurt them at all and they don't pay any attention to it once it's on.....Hope this helps.......

Bill, thank you for your help. I'm going to see if I can hunt him this weekend with it wrapped and if it doesn't work I have to make a trip to Paris farmers Union for some bands and the tool.

Thanks bunnyhuntah, I went to tractor supply to buy the banding materials and put the band on this afternoon. I just don't see any way that tail would heal even if I kept him home for a month the tail is so long it would happen again in no time. I let you guy know when it drops off for future reference..

I have heard of guys doing this, also in a dogs health book i have ready about doing this with bitches that have large nipples from repetitive litters. once the large tit gets a bump (possible cancer) the guy puts the dog on antibiotics and puts a band on the tit. The reason for my rambling is basically to say, keep an eye out for infection. check his gums a few times for a fever. Having antibiotics on hand wouldn’t hurt JMO.

good luck and let us know how it turns out.

His tail came off on Saturday. I could tell he was under the weather so I did start some antibiotics. He's much better now but I will use the entire prescription. It took a total of 10 days for it to fall off. Thank you all for your help and advice.

Ha ha, it's gone. Kind of funny though, the pup was wagging his tail waiting for my son to let him in and I guess on one of the wags it just flew off into he snow bank. He was amazed that he got to witness the very instant it came off.

It was also kind of sick looking for a key ring.

Your right, it's been a good year!  Proof that even a short fat bald guy can get lucky!

Crossroads, I'm giving cefpodoxime Proxetil 100 mg. What do you use?
